Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is a non-psychoactive compound found in raw cannabis plant. It is somewhat similar to the more popular cannabinoid , the cannabidiol (CBD). However, CBDA differs in chemical composition by having a carboxylic acid group that is absent in CBD.
CBDA is currently in the spotlight as research suggest that CBDA has superior absorption and uptake in the human body, making it possibly more effective for treating health conditions than CBD alone. But many are concerned about the potential for overdose since CBDA since has been studied less extensively than CBD.
In this article, we aim to explore the truth whether or not CBDA can cause overdose and provide information on how to use it safely.
Article Highlights
- CBDA does not have any known cases of overdose
- The non psychoactive cannabinoids, like CBD and CBDA, have minimal side effects
- CBDA is the precursor to CBD, and has superior absorption and anti inflammatory properties
What Is CBDA and How Is It Different From CBD?
Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), is a natural precursor compound to CBD found in the raw hemp plant. The plant enzymes convert the mother cannabinoid, CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) to CBDA, the most abundant cannabinoid in the hemp flower. CBDA is an acidic form of cannabidiol (CBD), and is found in higher concentrations in the plant material when not exposed to high temperatures during processing.
When the hemp extract or flower is heated, CBDA turns into CBD, this process is called decarboxylation. Decarboxylation releases the acidic carboxyl group in CBDA into carbon dioxide, hence, converting it to CBD.
CBDA has been found to work with the body's endocannabinoid system in similar ways other cannabinoids do. The endocannabinoid system is a network containing numbers of receptors, enzymes, and other molecules working together to regulate various functions in the body. Like CBD, CBDA interacts with the cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body and the central nervous system resulting to various potential health benefits as relevant clinical trials and animal studies suggest.
The scientific community is still conducting research on CBDA and its potential medicinal benefits. Though many of the same benefits that have been attributed to CBD, such as its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, are also found to be present in CBDA and other acidic cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

Benefits of CBDA
Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) has been shown to have therapeutic properties. While there is still ongoing research on the specific benefits of CBDA, some of the potential benefits that have been identified include:
Enhanced absorption of CBDA
A significant hurdle for CBD is the low absorption, or uptake, into the body. Many CBD clinical trials have to use high doses, in the 100s of mgs to get a clinical benefit. Since most CBD oil products dose around 25-50mg, it makes it difficult for many consumers to get a real therapeutic dose.
There are now multiple studies, both in animals and humans, finding that CBDA has superior absorption to CBD. In fact, this appears to be between 450% to 1000% better than CBD oil!
Anti-inflammatory Effects
There is a number of relevant animal studies suggesting that CBDA may have relieve inflammation, similar to those of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). One research team have found that CBDA may be able to treat inflammation related conditions such as joint pain and other inflammation associated conditions.
This has been connected to the ability of CBDA to inhibit and prevent production of the pro-inflammatory enzyme COX 2 (cyclooxygenase 2), a common target for some NSAID drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin.
Anti-proliferative Properties
Current research revealed that CBDA may have anti-proliferative effects on breast cancer cells. One particular study have found that CBDA may inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells in preliminary trials.
Depression and Anxiety Relief
There is also systematic review showing that CBDA may have potential benefits for anxiety and depression. Clinical data revealed that it may be useful in alleviating mood and anxiety disorders.
While these benefits are promising, it is important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the safety and side effects of CBDA, and to establish the clinical data. Human trials are still needed to confirm the findings of these research and to determine the appropriate dosage and administration of CBDA.
It is also important to note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not evaluated the safety or efficacy of CBDA. Therefore, it should not be used as a substitute for other medications or treatments recommended by a healthcare professional.
The Recommended Dosage for CBDA
In present times, the recommended dosage of CBDA is still being studied by the scientific community considering it is a less well-known cannabinoid compared to CBD. However, it is generally thought that CBDA dosage is to be lower than that of CBD. The typical dosage of CBDA would be around 20-50mg per day. See out CBDA dosage guide for more ideas. However, it is always best to start in a lower dose and then gradually increase it as needed, so you can monitor your body's response to the CBDA product. And as mentioned, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet evaluated the safety or efficacy of CBDA. Therefore the FDA cannot yet provide a proper dosage recommendation.
Factors that may affect the recommended dosage of CBDA include an individual's body weight, age, and medical condition. For example, individuals with a higher body weight may require a higher dosage of CBDA compared to those with a lower body weight. Similarly, individuals with a specific medical condition may require a different dosage than those without the condition.
It is also important to note that very high doses of CBDA may lead to adverse reactions or adverse effects. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when taking CBDA and to avoid taking high doses without the guidance of a healthcare provider. As the research on CBDA and its properties is still ongoing, the information on dosage, benefits and side effects may evolve and change over time. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment regimen.
Is Overdose A Thing with CBDA?
Wondering what will happen when you take too much of a non-toxic acidic cannabinoid? Nothing. That's right, nothing at all. AS of right now, there is no known overdose amount for CBDA.That's because CBDA is a non-toxic acidic cannabinoid and therefore, it can't cause harm to your body in any way. That is why it's considered to be generally safe for use in all kinds of products, including food and beverages.
However, this doesn't mean that you should not take CBDA with safety and precaution in mind. To ensure your safety, following the recommended dosage stated in the label when using any product containing CBDA is crucial. You should also double check if you're allergic to any of the ingredients included in it so you can take precautions.
If you are on multiple medications or have a history of liver complications, speak with your physician before trying CBDA or CBD oil.
What to Do in Case of CBDA Side Effects
CBDA is considered safe for the general population. But in case of side effects, the symptoms are usually mild and may include drowsiness and changes in appetite. Should you experience severe symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. In case of CBDA side effects, you should:
- Stop taking the drug immediately and consult your doctor if you experience any negative reactions or symptoms after taking it.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins from your body (this is especially important if you have been vomiting).
- Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you personally (it may make you drowsy).
Ways to Ensure Safe Use of CBDA
When looking for a CBDA product you can trust, it's crucial to ensure you get the highest quality and potency as possible.- Look for CBDA products that are third-party lab tested. This will ensure that your product has been verified to contain the right amount of cannabinoids in it and that it is free of any contaminants.
- Make sure you buy from a reputable brand. There are plenty of sellers online where you can find high-quality CBDA products, but there are also plenty of suppliers where the quality is questionable and the price is too good to be true. Make sure that you do your research and find out who is selling the best product at an affordable price before buying from them.
- Start low and go slow! If this is your first time trying CBDA or any other hemp derived CBD products, start with a minimal dose and gradually increase as needed until you find what works best for your body.
Thoughts on the Safety of CBDA Usage
CBDA is an exciting raw form of CBD that has the potential to provide numerous health benefits beyond conventional CBD products. But it's essential to understand that it's not a magic cure-all. CBDA products should never be used as a substitute for any medical treatment.Additionally, it is important to note that the legal status of CBDA is the same as CBD. In all states, it is legal to purchase and use CBDA thanks to the 2018 federal farm bill. Make sure to always check the federal laws and regulations in your area before purchasing or using CBDA.
If you live in a state where recreational cannabis is legal, you should be able to buy CBDA at any credited dispensary or hemp store. Since hemp is legal in all states, you can also buy CBDA or CBD products online.
