CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the unprocessed form of CBD, and has over 4 fold greater absorption than CBD. This cannabinoid is purified from a unique hemp extraction process that does not decarboxylate into CBD. The acidic cannabinoids have their own unique properties separate from CBD oil, that are only recently being discovered.
If your friends have used CBD, but you have not found any difference with traditional CBD tinctures, this may be right for you.
Natural Dos CBDA tinctures contain all the acidic cannabinoids from the hemp plant, in a product we term Natural Spectrum CBDA tinctures. Compared to full spectrum CBD (no THC) or broad spectrum CBD (minimal THC), which contain multiple decarboxylated cannabinoids, the new Natural Spectrum CBDA tinctures have much greater potency on a mg to mg basis due to our proprietary manufacturing process.

How to store your CBDA tincture
CBDA tincture should be stored at room temperature or below, and kept out of direct sunlight exposure for extended periods of time. We sell all CBDA tinctures in brown bottles to reduce potential sunlight induced decarboxylation (CBDA to CBD). However, in our testing, we found that there was very minimal decarboxylation if left in a bottle exposed to the sun for over a week.
Our unique manufacturing process of hemp extract
We purify the cannabidiolic acid and the other minor cannabinoids from full hemp extract to create our proprietary Natural Spectrum CBDA tincture. A normal CBD product will have undergone a heated step during purification, causing decarboxylation of CBDA cannabinoids to CBD. This decarboxylation step also occurs to other minor cannabinoids, such as CBGA to CBG, that are in the natural acidic state.
Natural Dos uses a proprietary water purification process to isolate the full spectrum of acidic cannabinoids, both CBDA and minor cannabinoids.
From the hemp extract, purification of single cannabinoids or all cannabinoids are used to produce multiple kinds of products:
Natural Spectrum CBDA
This CBDA oil from Natural Dos contains all the acidic cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. This includes CBDA, and minor cannabinoids like CBGA, THCA, CBCA, and CBDVA. The ratio of minor cannabinoids depends on the hemp plant species from the extract.
Full Spectrum CBD
This CBD oil product contains all the decarboxylated cannabinoids, such as CBD, THC, CBG, CBC, and CBDVA. The ratio of minor cannabinoids depends on the hemp plant species from the extract.
Broad Spectrum CBD
This CBD oil product contains most of the decarboxylated cannabinoids, such as CBD, CBG, CBC, and CBDVA, but does not contain THC. The ratio of minor cannabinoids depends on the cannabis species from the extract.
Isolate
These cannabinoid products use isolated single cannabinoids, such as CBD, CBG, or even CBDA isolates. While the most common is CBD isolate products, minor cannabinoids from isolates are also now being used to create custom formulations.
Benefits of CBDA tincture
Some people think that CBDA needs to be decarboxylated into CBD to provide potential health benefits, in a similar fashion that THCA needs to be decarboxylated into THC to yield its euphoric properties. This is not true, multiple studies have shown that CBDA binds to CB2 receptors at approximate levels as CBD.
CBDA is non psychoactive, in that it does not have the euphoric sensation that THC is known for. While the definition of psychoactive is being used somewhat loose here since CBDA can positively affect your mood, clinically and legally it is not considered to. This has important implications for people who may be driving or using heavy equipment.
CBDA tincture and the endocannabinoid system
The endocannabinoid system has many different receptors associated with it, such as cannabinoid receptors 1 & 2 (CB1 & Cb2) and 5HT1A. These are known targets for naturally produced endocannabinoids, but are also targets for cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant.
Both CBD and CBDA are known to interact with CB2 receptors, and modulate the activity and downstream signaling properties. These functions appear to be in combination with the endogenous cannabinoids, AEA and 2-DG. For a comprehensive review of CBDAs interaction with CB2, see our post on the endocannabinoid system and CBDA.
CBDA tincture and anxiety
One of the benefits reported by many users of CBD and CBDA oil is helping with anxiety. Preclinical studies using CBDA have found that it is an activator of the endocannabinoid receptor 5HT1A, a serotonin modulator in the nervous system. This receptor, 5HT1A, is commonly referred to as a target for SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), which may be a reason why CBDA may have significant anti anxiety properties. See our guide for more information on CBDA tincture and anxiety.
Natural Spectrum CBDA tincture and absorption
A significant property of CBDA tincture is the enhanced absorption of these class of acidic cannabinoids. A study out of University of Sydney has found an additional entourage effect with CBDA. When the scientists tested blood levels of CBDA as an isolate vs CBDA full spectrum, the full spectrum CBDA absorption was enhanced over 14 fold when in the presence of other cannabinoids. The enhanced absorption of CBDA compared to other minor cannabinoids and CBD oil has been validated in other studies, and you can see our report specific on CBDA absorption.
CBDA tincture and inflammation
Hemp derived CBDA has been reported to have anti inflammatory properties through its ability to inhibit the COX2 (cyclooxygenase 2) enzyme. The COX2 enzyme is the target of multiple over the counter NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen. CBDA inhibition of COX2 was discovered as a mechanism for preventing metastasis in a breast cancer cell line.
Potential side effects of CBDA tincture
CBDA has somewhat similar side effects as CBD, which are usually mild. The side effects will depend on your personal biochemistry, but largely on how much you take in a dose, and how often you consume CBDA tincture during the day. Some of the side effects may include:
- Drowsiness
- Lowering of blood pressure
- Changes in mood
- Lightheadedness
- Dry mouth
If you are on medications, please speak with your physician about taking CBDA tincture. While there are no studies on drug-drug interactions with CBDA, phase I clinical trials with the CBD prescription drug Epidiolex, did find elevated liver enzymes at higher concentrations of CBD. However, these results were based on over 1000mg of CBD per day, in combination with multiple other anti-seizure drugs.
CBDA is federally legal as of 2018 when the federal farm bill passed. All CBDA tinctures are derived from licensed hemp farms, and our CBDA is purified in our state licensed laboratory. While full spectrum CBDA tincture does contain THCA & some THC, combined they are below the federal limit of 0.3% by mass. The same regulation that apply to the CBD tincture industry also apply to our products.
Summary
We should note that the range of uptakes will be dependent on the individual and the formulation of the CBDA product. For example, a recent study found that CBDA absorption was increased 14x when taken in a full spectrum formulation with significant amounts of other cannabinoids.
The CBDA tincture product is a great alternative to CBD tinctures, and we think has much more potential for enhanced benefits. Natural Dos produces the highest quality CBDA oil, and our products reflect that in their potency and purity. Our specially formulated products come in convenient packaging, with smaller sizes but higher concentration CBDA oil so you can bring them on the go wherever you need relief.FAQ - CBDA Tincture
CBDA oil tinctures are a great way to enhance your CBDA absorption. Applying CBDA tincture under the tongue (sublingual) can further enhance the absorption, improving the benefits of CBDA.
Many people take CBDA for help with stress and anxiety, pain relief, and boosting sleep.
CBDA is the most abundant cannabinoid in the hemp flower, and is the precursor to CBD. All CBD is produced by extracting CBDA and applying heat to make the conversion. CBDA tinctures are made by special purification processes that do not use heat and isolate the acidic cannabinoids into a CBDA oil.
The CBDA oil is then mixed with another carrier oil, usually MCT coconut oil, and natural extract flavors to make the tincture.
